Arts GCSE entries 2010 to 2014

16 July 2015

Patterns in GCSE entries 2010 to 2014

Over the last 5 years there has been a decline of 13% in the number of arts GCSE entries from 720,438 in 2010, to 624,452 in 2014.

The number of pupils in year 11 (the year most students take GCSEs) fluctuates each year. In 2010 it was 565,660 and in 2014 it was 549,110, or a fall of 3%.

Subjects saw a recovery in 2014, however the numbers are still below 2010 levels and continue to cause concern.

As a comparison the EBacc subjects of Geography and History have seen rises of 16% in their entries since 2010.

We have defined arts GCSEs as:

  • Art and Design subjects
  • Design and Technology
  • Drama
  • Media/Film/TV Studies
  • Music
  • Performing/expressive arts
