Policy and practice round-up January 2016

18 January 2016

This month we bring you news of how to apply to be a Lead Creative School in Wales, using film to teach literacy, details of careers and enterprise volunteering, the 64 Million Artists challenge to be creative this January and Art Is conference.

Apply to be a Lead Creative School

We’ve written before about the excellent Welsh Arts and Creative Learning plan. Applications are now open until 29 January to apply to be a Lead Creative School.

The Lead Creative Schools Scheme aims to promote new ways of working, with innovative bespoke programmes of learning designed to improve the quality of teaching and learning. The Scheme works with your school to provide the creative people, skills and resources that are needed to help you address the unique challenges you are facing.

Use Film to teach literacy

We know some CLA members are already big fans of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). Into Film and the BFI are offering a free MOOC course through Future Learn on using film to teach literacy.

The course will look at inspiring ways to teach literacy, the evidence base and how film can be used to develop a range of abilities, as well as expanding creativity and improving vocabulary.

It starts on 25 January and lasts four weeks. You can sign up here.

Volunteer to be a Careers and Enterprise Adviser

Making young people aware of the careers and entry requirements of the Creative industries is key to helping them make good choices about what to study.

The Careers and Enterprise Company – which is being funded by the Department for Education to provide careers advice to schools – is looking for employers or self-employed people to be Advisers to schools.

You can read more about the role and apply here.

64 Million artists challenges you to be creative this January

The January Challenge is a free set of 31 daily creative challenges delivered each morning to your inbox. You can sign up here to receive daily creative challenges that will take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.

Take a look at some of the challenges already completed on the BBC Get Creative page.
