To mark the 40th anniversary of the original 1982 Arts in Schools report, a suite of practical case studies was commissioned as a companion piece to the new Arts in Schools report.

Our case studies, grouped into seven themes and curated by arts researcher Sarah B Davies, cover a rich mix of artform specialism, school need, individual focus, community change and inclusive practices. The voices and experiences of school leaders, teachers, creative practitioners, pupils and arts organisations echo throughout, as the journeys, impacts and learning are recounted. The case studies span the past ten years and have been created as a practical resources responding to a question you might be asking yourself as you explore the value of the arts in education in your own setting. Each has taken a how-to approach and they cover a wide variety of perspectives grouped into the following themes:

The Arts in Schools project was funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and delivered by A New Direction, in partnership with the Bridge Network which funded these case studies.
